A master's job is
never done, it lives on through the ages.
The Officers of 1917 were installed on January 19, 1917. The installation was opened to the families and wives of the members.
In the month of April, Mr. Thomas Howison Jr., petitioned the Lodge for degrees. Brother Howison would later become the Secretary for Clovis Lodge, a job he held for forty three years.
A resolution was passed in May that said that every candidate that was raised to the sublime degree of Master Mason should be presented with a monitor and the resolution passed un-opposed.
In September there were 13 petitions for degrees were turned into the Lodge, some say it was because of the heightened scare of World War 1, whatever the reason, Clovis Lodge was glad to have these men as members. In October we purchased $200.00 worth of Liberty Bonds to help the war effort.
This year also brought around a good salary increase for the Secretary, A. S. Kirkpatrick. It went from $25.00 to $50.00 which was paid annual in December every year. In January of 1918 the Brethren of Clovis Lodge in order to care for the Brethren going to war, ordered and presented to all of the members of Clovis Lodge who were in the Armed Services at the time, a body belt and a certificate of standing to assist and identify members of Clovis Lodge, also to have a "Roll of Honor" made and displayed in the ante room of all of the members of the lodge who provided service to our country.
It is also worth noting that in the minutes this was Brother Smith's second term as Master of Clovis Lodge and in the years between he was a very active member of the Lodge and was present at almost every meeting.
On August 6, 1946, Bro. Fred Smith PM and charter member of Clovis Lodge was laid to rest in McFarland, Ca., and Delano Lodge 309 officiated at the Masonic Service. Kind words offered were, "Bro. Fred will long be remembered for his proficiency in the Lodge work and his great interest in Masonry and in the early history of Clovis Lodge." |
